The Rockies made official Wednesday the signing of two pitchers to one-year contracts — right-hander Kip Wells and lefty Mark Redman. The move is expected to shore up Colorado’s pitching depth.
Wells, 30, went 7-17 with a 5.70 ERA with the Cardinals last season and is expected to contend for the fifth starting spot in spring training. He has a 64-91 career record and a 4.63 ERA over 231 games with four clubs since 1999.
Redman is an option out of the bullpen and a candidate to be an emergency starter if he makes the team. A former American League all-star who will be 34 at the start of next season, he signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies last August. His highlight came in a five-inning shutout appearance Sept. 12 in a 12-0 victory over Philadelphia.
