Highlights from the Legislature on Thursday.

— Gov. Bill Ritter offered a major education package in his State of the State speech, calling it a “revolutionary shift” to align public education with college admission standards.

— Secretary of State Mike Coffman asked for more time and flexibility to fix problems with the state’s electronic voting machines. He said it’s possible they could be ready by November’s elections but couldn’t guarantee it since he has to make sure the machines are secure.

New Bills

— Bar prosecution of people who use deadly force against intruders in businesses. The “make my day law” currently covers only people in their homes. A similar bill dubbed “make my day better” was killed last year.

— Require drivers convicted of driving under the influence to get a license with a color-coded background: green for a controlled substance, red for persistent drunken driving.

— Require colleges to waive tuition costs for Colorado resident veterans who receive a Purple Heart or other superior decoration.

— Require a photo ID to vote.

— Require agents for athletes to register with the state.

— Require naturopathic doctors to be licensed.
