NEW YORK — The state’s attorney general said Saturday that he will lead a probe into the 1988 murders of a couple whose son served 17 years in prison before an appeals court said he might be innocent.

“I’m confident that we can look at it independently, with a top team of prosecutors, that will follow the evidence wherever it leads,” Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said.

Martin Tankleff was convicted in 1990 in the murders of Arlene and Seymour Tankleff, but a state appeals court ruled last month that new evidence about other possible suspects was compelling enough to warrant a new trial.
