SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea’s next president revealed plans Wednesday to abolish the government agency that has acted as North Korea’s strongest advocate in Seoul, a move that could rile Pyongyang amid the latest impasse at nuclear talks.
The Unification Ministry, where the North has turned for aid and projects to help its beleaguered economy, would be absorbed into a renamed Foreign and Unification Ministry under the proposal by President-elect Lee Myung-Bak.
Lee, a conservative former Seoul mayor and businessman who won a landslide victory last month to end a decade of liberal rule, has said he will take a tougher stance with the North after assuming office Feb. 25.
