TORRANCE, Calif.—Mark Ficarra, a 20-year veteran of newspapers and other publications, has been named publisher of the Daily Breeze and its three sister publications.

The announcement was made Tuesday by Los Angeles Newspaper Group, the owner of the papers and a division of Denver-based MediaNews Inc.

Ficarra previously served as vice president of advertising for the East Valley Tribune in Phoenix, general manager of Clipper Magazine and held executive sales positions with Cox Communications Inc., Thomson Newspapers and Freedom Communications Inc.

He will begin his new duties on Monday. Along with the Daily Breeze, he will have direct responsibility for the weekly Beach Reporter, Palos Verdes News and Impacto USA.

Liz Gaier, current publisher of the Daily Breeze, will return to MediaNews Inc., where she has served as senior vice president of new business development.

She has been publisher of the Daily Breeze since MediaNews acquired the newspaper in 2006.

MediaNews is the nation’s fourth-largest newspaper company. Together with its affiliated companies, it publishes nearly 60 daily newspapers in 13 states.
