PUEBLO, Colo.—Police say methamphetamine use is helping fuel an increase in crime in Pueblo.
Overall crime was up 7 percent in the city last year, led by a 29 percent increase in auto thefts.
Police Chief Jim Billings said Tuesday that meth use is a “major factor” in the crime spike.
Billings says Pueblo got a two-year, $400,000 federal grant to fight meth use. The money will pay for a crime analyst, three part-time clerks, police overtime pay and surveillance cameras.
While overall crime rose last year, homicides and rapes both declined.
