A man cooking French fries sparked an apartment fire that gutted his Northglenn home, displacing his family.

The fire happened at about 11:15 p.m. Thursday at the Village by the Park apartment complex, 10701 Pecos St., according to North Metro Fire Rescue.

When firefighters arrived, they found flames shooting out of a ground-floor apartment, said Wendy Forbes, a fire department spokeswoman.

No one was injured in the blaze, which Thornton firefighters also battled.

The man and his mother were home when the fire began.

The man, who was not identified, told a North Metro fire investigator that he was cooking French fries when the fire broke out, Forbes said. The investigator determined the fire originated on the stovetop after grease ignited.

The apartment suffered extreme fire and smoke damage, and the family lost just about all of its possessions, Forbes said. They did not have renters insurance.
