DENVER—Youngsters paraded the creatures they helped take care of the last few months on a stage at the National Western Stock Show Friday, watching as spectators dished out more than $275,000 for the animals.
Maynard was the Grand Champion steer at the Junior Livestock Champions Auction, netting $110,000. Shelby Kroupa, of White Lake, S.D., exhibited the steer.
Each exhibitor contributes 10 percent of the sale price of their animal to the National Western Scholarship Trust, which grants scholarships in Colorado and Wyoming for students interested in careers as rural medical doctors and in agribusiness. National Western spokeswoman Kati Anderson said about $150,000 was raised for the scholarship fund from 95 animals sold.
Other animals that snatched a high sale price were Jaime, the Grand Champion hog with $51,000. Houpie, the reserve Grand Champion steer, netted $34,000.
