Sen. Shawn Mitchell, R-Broomfield, criticized state transportation officials Monday for restoring HOV/HOT lane service on Interstate 25 while traffic remained slow near the sinkhole repair on I-25 near 58th Avenue.

After a water main break created the sinkhole Thursday, the Colorado Department of Transportation used the high-occupancy vehicle lanes in the center of I-25 for general traffic bypassing the repair site. Monday, CDOT returned the center lanes to buses, carpoolers and single-occupant vehicles paying tolls.

Mitchell, in a letter to CDOT executive director Russ George, noted “major slowing” Monday in the three general purpose lanes and asked “whether the public interest might be served by continuing to allow general traffic in the HOV lanes until road repairs are complete.”

CDOT spokeswoman Stacey Stegman said her agency is obligated to maintain faster travel times for the HOV lanes.
