RTD will have to spend an extra $4.5 million to $9 million to revisit new routing options for four FasTracks commuter trains following the agency’s failure to acquire major Union Pacific Railroad facilities in central Denver.

The Regional Transportation District had hoped to buy the UP’s properties northeast of Coors Field for train routes and a commuter-rail maintenance facility and relocate the freight railroad’s yards to Fort Lupton. But when the price tag came in at about $700 million, RTD walked away and began looking for new train routes originating in central Denver.
