FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Rock Canyon set a state swimming record Saturday, but Ralston Valley emerged with the Class 4A girls state swimming title.
A celebration over the record cost Rock Canyon some points. Shortly after Rock Canyon’s Londyn Clawson, Taylor Curado, Kirsten Milberg and Jehan Atoe finished first in the 200-yard medley relay in a record time of 1 minute, 48.30 seconds, Clawson and Curado jumped back into the pool to celebrate. Rules required them to stay out of the water once they left.
As a result, Clawson was disqualified from her heat in the consolation round of the 200 individual medley and Curado from the finals of the 50 free.
Ralston Valley capitalized, winning its second straight team title with 302 points, while Rock Canyon finished second with 269. Thompson Valley was third with 161 points.
In individual events, Kelci Conci became the first state swimming champion from Moffat County with her victory in the 50 free. She finished second last year.
The Hewson family had more success, with Estes Park coach Sam Hewson’s twins Kenzie (100 free) and Lauren (100 breaststroke) earning state titles. Sam Hewson won three titles in his prep days at Loveland and Thompson Valley. Estes Park also won the 200 free relay.
Rock Canyon’s Kirsten Milberg won a third straight title in 100 backstroke.
