Two of the three surviving members of a Kansas family, hospitalized Saturday after a serious crash on Interstate 70, have had their medical conditions upgraded, according to a Swedish Medical Center spokeswoman.

Fifteen-year-old Alyssa Schoenwald improved to serious condition. Her twin sister, Avery, has improved to fair. Mother Janelle Schoenwald, 46, remains in fair condition.

The family from Wichita was headed into the mountains for a spur-of-the-moment ski trip when their van slammed into the back of another vehicle and was then struck by a tractor-trailer.

Father Alan “Ken” Schoenwald, 46, was killed along with his 18-year-old daughter Jennalea and the couple’s son Jace, 13.

None of the Schoenwalds was wearing seat belts, according to Colorado State Troopers, who were investigating whether driver Ken Schoenwald had fallen asleep or was distracted at the time of the crash.
