BOULDER, Colo.—A trash-disposal company in Boulder will offer bear-proof garbage cans starting this spring after a surge of bear encounters in the city last summer.

Western Disposal says 250 of the special containers will be offered to customers in some neighborhoods where bears have been a problem.

State wildlife officials killed two bears after repeat encounters in Boulder last summer.

More and more bears are rummaging for food in neighborhoods across the state because of weather conditions that made their natural food scarce, and because urban growth is encroaching on their habitat.

Western Disposal customers will have to pay an extra $10 a month for bear-proof containers. The company says the containers are more expensive and the haulers have to get out of their trucks to empty them.
