COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Counselors are being made available at a Colorado Springs high school following the weekend death of a 14-year-old freshman.
Police say Graham Johnson died early Sunday after he was struck by a vehicle near his home.
Authorities allege that 20-year-old Michael E. Gibbs hit Graham at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, then sped away in his Pontiac GTO.
Officers say they followed a trail of engine fluids to Gibbs’ house and found the damaged car. Gibbs allegedly had a blood-alcohol level of at least 0.15 — nearly twice the legal limit in Colorado.
Gibbs is being held on suspicion of driving under the influence with an excessive blood-alcohol content, plus negligent homicide and reckless endangerment.
Johnson was a student at Cheyenne Mountain High School.
