A video of two men casing a Sonic Drive-In shortly after a double homicide at a nearby Colorado Springs apartment complex has been released in an attempt to identify one of the men.
The homicide occurred about 2:35 a.m. Feb. 9 at the Whitney Young Manor apartment complex in southeast Colorado Springs, according to Lt. Skip Arms of the Colorado Springs Police Department.
Killed were Darrell Mitchell, 20, and Samone Robinson, 21, who each died of a single gunshot to the head.
Two other people, Derek Austin, 20, and Maurice Magazine, 21, were also shot but were able to flee to the nearby Sonic Drive-In where they hid, said Arms.
Arms said the video clip, which the Colorado Springs Police released Thursday, shows two men casing the Sonic shortly after the shootings.
Arms said that investigators are trying to identify the man on the left, in the blue jacket and white shirt in the clip.
“We want to see if we can place him at the party,” Arms said.
Arms said the other man in the video clip has been identified.
By finding the second man, investigators can compare the stories and potentially determine their whereabouts at the time of the homicides.
Arms said that the shootings occurred at a “party that got out of hand.”
He said gang members were present at the party but that he wouldn’t necessarily call the shootings gang-related.
“Gang involved” might be a better term, he said, to explain a situation where a gang member throws a party, an argument develops and it escalates to the point where shots are fired.
Two people have been arrested in connection with the homicide.
Arms identified them as Hiram Larry Sampson, 32, and Darneau Pepper, 35.
Arms said Sampson was arrested the day after the shooting. Pepper was arrested Feb. 14 in Kentucky.
