A man who led a Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy on a high-speed chase in Castle Rock Monday used a 6-year-old girl as a shield before releasing her and running across a snow-packed field, investigators said.

Authorities said he gave up after a short distance and was arrested. They did not release his name because he uses a number of aliases. He was arrested on charges including reckless driving, child abuse and vehicular eluding. The nine-minute chase started about 5:45 p.m. when a deputy spotted a Ford pickup going 75 mph in a 45-mph zone.

When the officer tried to pull the truck over, it sped away, blowing through stop signs and around cars, according to the sheriff’s office. He was cornered on a dead-end private driveway in the Legacy Hills subdivision, and got out of the car holding the child. She was not injured.
