PUEBLO, Colo.—A survey using an underwater camera hasn’t turned up any new evidence of adult zebra mussels at a lake west of Pueblo.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has used the camera and divers the past two weeks to investigate the extent of the infestation of the nuisance species at Lake Pueblo. Federal officials say they can’t say for sure there are no more mussels in the lake despite the survey’s results.

The black-and-white-striped mussels, native to Europe, were first discovered in the United States in the Great Lakes in 1988. They drive out native species, blocking industrial pipes and boats’ motors.

State officials will start inspecting boats and other vessels to prevent transferring the mussels. State biologists found two adult mussels and larvae in Lake Pueblo in November.
