Memo to Packer fans near and far: Now that Brett Favre is gone, don’t hold your breath waiting for the next Favre to arrive.
We in Denver have seen the fallout that accompanies a legendary quarterback’s retirement. The Broncos haven’t been to a Super Bowl in any of the nine seasons since John Elway walked away, missing the playoffs five times.
It’s more than that, though. It’s more than wins and losses. The Broncos haven’t had the same Q rating since Elway left, either. They haven’t had the same swagger, the same panache.
The bottom line is that they haven’t been as entertaining. They haven’t been must-see TV. They haven’t had a quarterback who could make you sit on the edge of your seat and wait for something special to happen.
Who knows, Packer Nation? Maybe Aaron Rodgers will be a very good player. Maybe he’ll keep the Packers in the playoff hunt.
But if you’re hoping he turns into the next Favre, I’ve got two words for you.
Brian Griese.
