The Denver City and County Building reopened just before 11 a.m. after a bomb threat prompted an evacuation for most of the morning.

At about 10 a.m., workers began to trickle back in, assisting officials by checking their offices to see whether anything was out of place.

At 10:50 a.m., the building got an all-clear and fully reopened for business. No dangerous materials or devices were found.

Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said police did not order an evacuation, but the building staff did. The Denver bomb squad headed up a search of the building after a bomb threat came in just before 8:30.

“It’s very unfortunate and very disruptive,” Jackson said. “Obviously, it has affected a lot of people. This is a very busy building.”

Rob McCallum, spokesman for the Colorado Judicial Branch, said that both Denver County courts and district courts resumed hearing cases this afternoon.

He stressed that court times missed while the building was closed must be made up.

“Anyone who missed should show up today or no later than tomorrow” to the courtroom to which they were originally assigned.

Roads in the area near the building were blocked, and defendants who were in the building for court hearings were taken away by bus.

Christina Lopez, 43, of Denver was in the hallway on the third floor at about 8:20 a.m. when building security told everyone to leave.

“Some people were nervous. Some people were worried,” she said. “Some people didn’t say anything at all.”

Lopez took the stairs down and exited the building, joining the crowd milling in Civic Center park with cellphones to their ears, waiting for news.
