If the season started today, the Broncos’ fullbacks would be either Mike Bell or Steven Jackson and their kicker would be Matt Prater.
The other Steven Jackson spent the past two seasons on practice squads in Carolina and Minnesota and has never played in an NFL game. Bell, a running back by trade, has only had a handful of plays at fullback. Prater boomed his kickoffs in a late two-game audition, but has attempted just four NFL field goals.
The Broncos did open discussions with Cecil Sapp, their starting fullback last year who is now a free agent. And the team also continues to keep talks alive with free-agent kicker Jason Elam. Neither player is close to an agreement. Sapp made $1.3 million last year and Elam was paid $2.245 million.
Footnotes
Seattle receiver and former University of Colorado star D.J. Hackett will visit the Washington Redskins on Wednesday. Hackett had six catches for 101 yards and a touchdown in Seattle’s NFC playoff win against the Redskins two months ago.
… The Broncos waived offensive tackle Doug Nienhuis, who was the team’s property the past two years, but never made it to the active roster. Nienhuis was on the Broncos’ practice squad in 2006 and was placed on the NFL Europa injured list last year.

This article has been corrected in this online archive. Originally, an incorrect first name was cited for Broncos kicker Matt Prater, and a reference to his attempted NFL field goals was also corrected.
