A Westminster man convicted of child abuse resulting in death in the 2006 death of his girlfriend’s 7-month-old baby was sentenced on Friday to 24 years in prison.
Jefferson County District Court Judge Jane Tidball sentenced Anthony Stockdale for the April 2006 death of Brenna Nelson. He was convicted after a December 2007 trial.
The death occurred when the baby’s mother left to go to the grocery store, said a press release from Scott Storey, the district attorney for Jefferson and Gilpin counties.
The release gave the following account of the events:
Stockdale ran into the store, saying the baby had stopped breathing.
The mother tried to resuscitate the baby without success, and she and the boyfriend started driving towards what they believed was the nearest hospital.
They ended up at a gas station in Denver. As the attendant at the station tried to call 911, Stockdale fled and was located a couple of weeks later.
Tidball said Stockdale’s flight and failure to provide information or assistance to doctors was a factor in the sentence.
