LUCERNE — A Lucerne man was severely injured defending himself from two men who broke into his home.

The 55-year-old man, who hasn’t been identified, was home with his wife waiting for a guest when two men knocked on their door Friday night, according to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.

The two broke the door off its hinges and forced their way into the house.

“He was expecting somebody at that same time, so he initially opened the door. When he recognized it was two home invaders, he tried to close it, and there was a violent struggle, and they broke in,” said Weld County Deputy Shane Scofield. “He was pistol-whipped in the face.”

The victim said he didn’t know his attackers.

SWAT officer in shooting identified

BOULDER — Boulder police have identified the SWAT officer who shot and killed a man who claimed to have a bomb Monday as Matt De Laria, a corporal with the University of Colorado Police Department.

DeLaria was one of a large number of SWAT officers brought into Boulder Community Hospital after Terrance Baughman, 32, threatened to blow himself up with a homemade bomb inside the hospital’s emergency-room entrance.

Police negotiated with Baughman for four hours before Baughman attempted to walk deeper into the hospital. Police initially shot him with bean bags and nonlethal, hard- rubber bullets to stop him. When that failed, commanders gave the go-ahead to DeLaria to kill Baughman.

DeLaria fired one shot from 30 yards away, hitting Baughman in the chest, police said.
