A mistake this afternoon stalled the city of Denver’s lottery in assigning park permits to groups seeking to gather — or protest — during the Democratic National Convention in late August.

When city officials started the process of drawing names for Civic Center — which is the ground most wanted by a group called Re-create 68 — the name card to be added to the clear plastic lottery box for R-68 was missing. Several other name cards representing others affiliated with the group also weren’t there.

Re-create 68’s Glenn Spagnuolo said the mistake is evidence the city wants to exclude them.

“I think it’s a disgrace,” Spagnuolo said. “They had all this time to figure it out, and they still couldn’t get it right.”

Officials said they are checking a spreadsheet of applicants as they read each card, and making new cards if necessary, prior to adding the cards to the lottery drawing.
