Commuters on Interstate 70 got a chuckle Tuesday courtesy of a bad speller at the state highway department.

“Lookout Mountian,” stated the green sign notifying motorists of the upcoming exit in the westbound lanes, with the Rockies stretching out behind it.

“Living in Colorado, there’s no excuse not to be able to spell ‘mountain,’ ” said Stacey Stegman, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

A contractor hung the sign, but it was printed by CDOT, she said, meaning several people saw the sign before and while it was put up, but apparently no one noticed the typo. Alert motorists notified the highway department right away, and a plate was put over the word “mountain” until it can be corrected in the next few days, Stegman said. The cost will be minimal, she said, adding that a couple of misspellings on road signs crop up each year.
