Bob Mould seemed energized and refreshed at Saturday’s Fox Theatre show. Photos and text by contributor .

The last time I saw Bob Mould must’ve been in 1994 or ’95, and it was also at in Boulder. That show was a very down tempo affair, Mould sitting alone on the stage with an acoustic guitar. I seem to recall the material being more like the “Black Sheets of Rain” stuff I was into at the time, along with some acoustic reworkings of songs — which Bob managed to drown all the pop and feel-good out of. It was all pretty depressing, come to think of it.

When Mould visited the Fox again on Saturday night, he must have been in a much better mood. Either that, or he’d decided to just blow away his demons with a non-stop set of pure rock. Covering his newer material, as well as all of my Sugar favorites, the Bob Mould Band thrashed and wailed their way through a long set, and two fat encores.

The Fox felt nearly full, and a quasi-pit even formed, with drunk college kids bouncing up and down against the middle-agers who may or may not have been there “back in the day.” Overall it was a great vibe, with beaming faces on the adoring fans. Bob deserves much credit for still being able to rock like he did — I have a feeling things are going much better for him these days.
