GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A Delta woman has been cited for cruelty to animals following the death of a neighbor’s pet Chihuahua that ate food laced with antifreeze.

Interim Police Chief Roger Christian says 46-year-old Susan Irene Weiss left bowls containing chicken soup and antifreeze outside her home in an effort to keep stray cats away.

Christian says the woman told authorities she didn’t know antifreeze could kill — and thought it would only give the animals an upset stomach.

Christian describes Weiss as remorseful, but says she should have called animal control instead of using poison.

The dog’s death in Delta County is unrelated to that of another dog in Mesa County, who died last week from strychnine poisoning.

Authorities say the dog may’ve eaten contaminated meat.
