It’s the one boys swim meet of the year that is a can’t miss. The Colorado High School Swim Coaches Association Dick Rush Swim and Dive Invitational is the official name, but we’ll simply call it The Rush. It is one of the few times during the season when the best of both classifications come together for one day. Loveland’s Mountain View Aquatics Center is the place to be Saturday — championship finals begin at 3 p.m. — to see state champions Tyler Bush of Fort Collins, Jeremy Allison of Cherokee Trail and Nick Koerner of Silver Creek. It will also be the first big high school meet for Legacy freshman Steve Schmuhl. The Lightning frosh has the fastest qualifying time in the 100-yard freestyle. The team race, as usual, is Regis’ to lose. The Raiders, winners of 15 of the last 16 big-school titles, are loaded with depth, and senior Jay Kim will be fun to watch in the 100 butterfly. He is the only person in the field to break the 50-second mark in the event this season.
BASEBALL Where is everybody?
Spring break is upon us for the next several weeks, and the upper classification schedule this weekend is light, to say the least. Early bragging rights in the Southwestern League are up for grabs Saturday morning in Grand Junction. The host Tigers (7-1), just three years removed from winning the Class 5A title, will welcome Durango (5-1). The Demons have feasted on New Mexico schools from Carlsbad to Roswell, but open Centennial State play with the Mesa County double: Fruita Monument on Friday and Grand Junction on Saturday. Travel 40 miles southeast of Grand Junction on Colorado 50 to Delta, where the Panthers are off to a 5-0 start. The well-traveled Sailors of Steamboat Springs will be in town for a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m.
TRACK AND FIELD Roosting in Fort Collins.
The Choice City hosts the premier track meet of the weekend, the Runners Roost Invitational. But it’s not the only event of the week — feature events are in nearly every corner of the state from Lamar to Rangely and Pagosa Springs to Sterling.
GIRLS SOCCER Ram tough.
If the preseason nonleague run of the Rampart girls soccer team is any indication of things to come, then maybe coach Bre Brubaker is on to something. The Rams are 6-0, including a 3-0 victory over longtime rival Colorado Springs and 4A powerhouse Liberty. The Rams start C.S. Metro League play Tuesday against Sand Creek (3-1) and then the following Friday against Doherty (4-1).
