Congressional contender Jared Polis has filed two complaints against opponent Will Shafroth, accusing him of filing false campaign reports.
Polis alleges that Shafroth, a Boulder conservationist, listed 48 donors as “community volunteers” when they actually had other occupations and employers, according to complaints filed last week with the Federal Election Commission and the Justice Department’s Election Crimes bureau.
“It is our belief that this may have occurred because (Shafroth) had an interest in concealing the true identity of these donors or . . . he had not undertaken ‘best efforts’ to obtain this information,” wrote Polis, the former head of the State Board of Education.
The Shafroth campaign checked the donors with a public watchdog group or called each donor back and made seven changes, according to its website. The campaign has filed an amendment with the FEC.
“We know no one is perfect, but what’s important is being open and honest about the process,” said Shafroth campaign manager Lynea Hanson.
Democrats Polis and Shafroth and former state Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald are vying for the 2nd Congressional District seat.
