Early indications are it could be an interesting state track and field meet in May, from a girls throwing standpoint. In the shot put, Joy Warrington of Widefield threw 43 feet, 3 inches (March 12) and 42-11 (March 22). Alamosa’s Katie Kruger registered 42-9 on the same day and meet (March 22, Pueblo Centennial Invitational) and finished second to Warrington. All three marks are better than the 42-7 of Burlington’s Gina Kovar at the 1985 championships, one of the longest throws on state record. Since Colorado records can be set only at the season-ending championships and given the quick jump in 2008 by prospective challengers, “this could be a matchup building,” said Gil Vasquez, Widefield’s throwing coach.
