PUEBLO, Colo.—Pueblo officials say they will oppose the Army’s efforts to nearly triple the size of a Fort Carson training site.

The Pueblo County commissioners say they will try to block the Army’s plan with a resolution telling the government to find additional land somewhere else.

The Pinon Canyon expansion would almost triple the size of the current Fort Carson maneuver site to about 1,000 square miles. They Army says it needs the room to train more soldiers on new weapons and tactics.

Ranchers have opposed the plan because they fear they will lose their land.

Commissioner Jeff Chostner says the Army could find training land in California, Texas, and Nevada.
