FORT COLLINS, Colo.—The city’s Bike Library is open for business.
The new library has 50 bikes to lend to the public, free of charge, with bikes available from two locations. Lenders can borrow a bike for up to a week.
The library is funded by a $132,000 federal grant for reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality and by $33,000 in matching donations from local groups.
“If you get 25 people (borrowing bikes) in one day, that’s 25 less cars on the road,” fleet manager Rafael Cletero said. Cletero said the library hopes to eventually offer 200 bikes.
The library opened Saturday.
Bikes were donated by city police and refurbished with the help of the Fort Collins Bike Co-op.
