Three local swimmers were among 38 athletes named Sunday to represent the U.S. in the Beijing Paralympic Games.

Erin Popovich of Fort Collins, Dave Denniston of Longmont and Melissa Stockwell of Colorado Springs qualified at the Paralympic Trials over the weekend in Minneapolis.

Popovich, a dwarf, won seven gold medals at the 2004 Athens Paralympics. Denniston was an elite able-bodied swimmer before he was paralyzed in a sledding accident three years ago. Stockwell, an Iraq war veteran, lost her left leg below the knee in a Baghdad roadside bomb explosion in 2004.

The Beijing Paralympics will follow the Olympics, Sept. 6-17.

Sullivan leads Huskers.

Pomona High School product Nick Sullivan continued his hot hitting for the No. 9-ranked Nebraska baseball team, driving in a career- high five runs as the Huskers swept a three-game series against visiting Texas Tech with a 5-3 victory.

Sullivan, a junior left fielder, hit a three-run homer for the second consecutive game for Nebraska (24-4-1, 10-1-1 Big 12).

“It was Nick Sullivan day at the ballpark,” said Huskers coach Mike Anderson, a former Northern Colorado player and assistant. “He had a great day.”

Sullivan leads the Huskers in hitting with a .377 average in 25 games and ranks third in RBIs with 23.
