Getting your player ready...

First baseman Todd Helton is one of the few Rockies showing consistency and pop at the plate. He is hitting .320 after going 4-for-13 with two homers and three RBIs in the three-game series against Arizona.

Helton bulked up to more than 225 pounds to begin last season, but is closer to 200 pounds now and looks more athletic, apparently without sacrificing power.

“I like the way he looks now,” Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. “He looks like a ballplayer. But I’m not going to second-guess anything these guys do. They take their conditioning much more seriously than you and I ever will.”

Speier rushed into work.

Relief pitcher Ryan Speier, called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs to replace the injured Luis Vizcaino, arrived at Coors Field in the fifth inning of Sunday’s game. He was quickly called to duty and pitched in the 10th, allowing one hit and one walk and striking out one. “I feel good, I feel strong,” he said. “It’s good to be back up.”
