COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Three seventh-grade boys who faced prosecution over a scuffle that started with racial taunts no longer face charges, after their parents agreed to resolve problems through a mediation program instead.
Monument police had recommended harassment charges against two boys for using a racial slur and advancing on a 12-year-old mixed-race student as they held a black hood and chanted “KKK” at Creekside Middle School.
Police also had recommended an assault charge for the 12-year-old boy, who was accused of putting a headlock on a boy who called him the racial epithet.
The 12-year-old’s mother, Alison Clay, says she’s satisfied with the outcome but worries that issues of racism are still unaddressed.
