DENVER—American Airlines is canceling more flights today—and may cancel more this week—as it tries to comply with federal rules about wiring on some 300 planes.

The airline Wednesday canceled eight arrivals and 13 departures at Denver International Airport, where American is the sixth-largest carrier.

Airline officials say they canceled about 500 flights overall Tuesday but didn’t know how many would be scrubbed Wednesday. It depended how quickly the airline could inspect and, if needed, rework the wiring in its MD-80 aircraft.

American operates about 2,300 daily flights, and more than one-third use MD-80s.

This is American’s second bout with mass cancellations in less than two weeks involving wiring rules set by the Federal Aviation Administration.
