DENVER—The director of the state Department of Natural Resources is warning lawmakers they need to develop a plan soon to prevent the spread of invasive zebra mussels.

Harris Sherman said Wednesday the mussels are now confined to Lake Pueblo State Park. He says it could cost the state millions of dollars to control them if they spread.

Sherman says the mussels aren’t known to threaten human health but can foul the taste of water.

He says their massive colonies can also block industrial pipes and damage boat motors by keeping cooling water from flowing through the engine. They also foul the taste of the water.
