Denver and other portions of the state are enduring a bit more winter today before spring weather starts to kick in this weekend.

Midday, near white-out conditions on Interstate-25 near Castle Rock contributed to pileup of up to 20 vehicles. The Colorado Department of Transportation closed I-25 southbound at Monument Hill.

There was no information yet available on injuries, but the highway re-opened about an hour later.

Scattered snow showers are part of Denver’s afternoon forecast, with a high of about 43 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph, but less than 1/2 inch of snow is expected.

A more likely chance of snow is in store today for some mountain areas, the weather service said, including southern Summit County and along Berthoud Pass.

Heavy snow continued to fall this morning in the Silverton area, according to the service. The Uncompahgre Gorge and the San Juan Mountains could see a surge of moisture this afternoon and receive an additional 6 inches of snow before the weather-maker moves on. Snow and blowing snow advisories remain posted for some mountain areas today. Winds are also expected to be gusty in northeastern Colorado.

Tonight, snow showers could persist in Denver and the low temperature should be about 23 degrees.

A warming trend will begin tomorrow in Denver as the high temperature climbs to 48 degrees under mostly sunny skies.

Sunday in Denver the high temperature will jump to about 65 degrees and high temperatures on Monday and Tuesday should be in the lower- to mid-70s, the weather service forecasts.
