STERLING, Colo.—The Department of Corrections says testing shows an inmate at the Sterling Correctional Facility has a potentially active case of tuberculosis.
Department spokeswoman Katherine Sanguinetti says the inmate was at a hospital Sunday.
Access is being limited to the prison, and health officials are identifying who had contact with the inmate to determine who might be at risk.
Sanguinetti says inmates are tested annually for TB, but this inmate was tested after showing symptoms. The inmate, who wasn’t identified, had previously tested positive for latent TB, which is not contagious.
The inmate had been held in Sterling since 2001.
TB is caused by a bacteria and spreads from person to person through the air.
