Do the math. Earth Day is Tuesday, so the appliance company Electrolux has established an online Eco Savings calculator () to determine how much would be saved by replacing appliances that are more than 10 years old with more efficient models. Among the findings:

The average U.S. household could reduce its carbon footprint by about 3 percent by replacing old appliances with new ones.

If one family in Springfield, Ill., replaced its old appliances, the carbon dioxide emissions cut annually would offset driving the family car 1,385 miles.

If everyone in New York City replaced their old appliances, the saved electricity would let one 60-watt light bulb burn in every household in the city, day and night, for 105 days.

If everyone in Texas replaced their old appliances, the amount of water saved — more than 12 billion gallons annually — would be equivalent to 12 hours of flow from one tap in every household in the state.

If everyone in the U.S. replaced their old appliances, the population could save about $25.9 billion over the next 10 years.
