Starting games appeals to Clint Barmes. Getting the call at second base Wednesday night, he put the Rockies on the board with a solo homer to left to lead off the sixth inning. It was his second homer of the season. Entering the game, Barmes was hitting .325 (13-for-40) in his seven starts this season.

Despite a solid spring training, lefty reliever Josh Newman didn’t make the big-league team. But now he’s with the Rockies, replacing lefty Micah Bowie, who’s on the 15-day disabled list with a strained forearm. “I’m not going to lie, I was a little bit upset, but it doesn’t do you any good to mope or complain. I just tried to use it as fuel to get better and now I get my chance,” said Newman, who posted a 2.16 ERA in seven games with the Triple-A Sky Sox.

Roving pitching coordinator Jim Wright filled the vacancy in the Rockies’ bullpen Wednesday night. With pitching coach Bob Apodaca away tending to family business, bullpen coach Rick Mathews has temporarily moved to the dugout.
