ASPEN — Friends say a backcountry skier killed in a 1,000-foot fall near Aspen was alive when a companion reached him but died before help could arrive.

Lathrop Strang, 46, of Carbondale died Friday while descending 12,953-foot Mount Sopris.

Kirsten and Penn Newhard of Basalt say they were among five people, including Strang, who set out for the peak.

The Newhards say Strang was conscious but unresponsive when companion Fletcher Yaw found him after the fall. Yaw gave Strang extra clothing and tried to make him comfortable before leaving for help.
