IRVING, Texas — Adam Scott made a 9-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to force a playoff, then made a 48-footer playing it again on the third playoff hole to beat Ryan Moore in the EDS Byron Nelson Championship on Sunday.
Playing the 18th hole for the third time in less than an hour, Scott hit his tee shot into a fairway bunker to the right. He got his approach to the front of the green, then rolled the putt over two ridges and into the cup.
“I got away with one today,” Scott said.
Moore had a chance to match Scott, but his pin-high putt from the fringe skimmed just past the cup.
Scott (71) and Moore (68), finished at 7-under-par 273.
Sorenstam wins playoff
AVENTURA, Fla. — Annika Sorenstam won the Stanford International Pro-Am for her 71st LPGA Tour victory, beating Paula Creamer with a par on the first playoff hole.
Both laid up at the par-5 18th in the playoff, with Creamer facing a downhill birdie putt from just off the fringe, and Sorenstam leaving herself a birdie try from almost the same spot where she missed the potential winner in regulation.
Sorenstam missed the birdie putt again, but Creamer’s 6-foot comebacker for par stopped short and gave the Swede the victory. They finished at 8-under 275.
“It’s very disappointing,” Creamer said. “But at the same time, I’m going against one of the best players in the world ever to play golf.”
Watson, North team up
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Tom Watson and Andy North won the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, beating Craig Stadler and Jeff Sluman by a stroke.
Watson and North teamed for a better-ball 64 for a 31-under 185 total. Stadler and Sluman shot a 61.
