BOGOTA, Colombia — Colombia’s defense minister says police have killed a major drug lord for whose capture the U.S. government offered a $5 million reward.
Juan Manuel Santos said Tuesday that police killed Miguel Angel Mejia in northern Colombia. He said two members of Mejia’s security unit also were killed.
Mejia and his brother Victor allegedly started off trafficking cocaine before joining with the far-right paramilitaries. The two have been on the run since paramilitary warlords were required to hand themselves over to the government.
