GOLDEN — A 15-year-old Bear Creek High student has been charged with starting an April 22 fire at the Lakewood school that caused an estimated $2.5 million in damage.

The teen was charged Tuesday with first-degree arson, second-degree arson, fourth-degree arson and criminal mischief.

The unidentified boy appeared in court Tuesday and was apprised of the charges. He has been held in the Mount View Juvenile Services Center. His next court appearance is May 14. The boy faces up to two years in a juvenile- corrections facility.

A second 15-year-old boy, also a Bear Creek student, has been identified as a possible suspect in the fire but has not been arrested, said Pam Russell, spokeswoman for the Jefferson County district attorney’s office.

The district attorney’s office has until June 11 to file charges in his case. Ann Schrader, The Denver Post
