BOULDER, Colo.—One of two men charged with attacking a man because of his race has pleaded guilty to a bias-motivated crime and was sentenced to 1 1/2 years in jail.

Nineteen-year-old Johsua Rezek of Lafayette and 19-year-old Abraham Paquet of Broomfield were charged in the March 11 attack on Ivan Ponce de Leon-Najera outside a convenience store in Boulder.

The two men allegedly walked up to Najera and asked, “Why are you stealing our jobs?”

Rezek pleaded guilty to the bias crime and a separate criminal mischief charge for breaking sprinkler heads and flooding cells at the Boulder County jail.

Paquet’s next court appearance will be May 16.
