WESTMINSTER — A teenager was killed late Friday after he lost control of his car during what police suspect may have been a drag race and slid sideways into an oncoming vehicle.
Matthew Herrera, 18, was killed in the 11:30 p.m. collision on West 92nd Avenue, said Stephanie Topkoff, Westminster police spokeswoman.
The 24-year-old driver of the vehicle that was hit was taken to a hospital, treated and released. The driver’s name wasn’t released.
A witness reported seeing Herrera, who was in a silver Chrysler Sebring, racing a white sedan on westbound 92nd Avenue just before the crash.
“Somebody said they saw them drag racing,” Topkoff said. “We’d like to speak with anyone who knows the identity of the driver of the white car.”
Herrera lost control of his Sebring between Newton and Meade streets, she said. The Sebring slid sideways into a vehicle headed east on the four-lane street, striking the other car on the driver’s side, Topkoff said. Herrera was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the white sedan did not stop, Topkoff said. The circumstances of the crash are under investigation, she said. Kirk Mitchell, The Denver Post
