Snowplow crews clearing the highway over Independence Pass say the snow is the deepest they have seen in more than two decades.

They have encountered drifts at least 7 feet deep so far and expect to plow through 20-foot-deep snow by the time they reach the summit, nearly 12,100 feet above sea level.

“I haven’t seen it like this in 25 years,” said Mike Bowker, heavy equipment manager for one of the crews.

Colorado 82 winds over Independence Pass, connecting Aspen and Leadville.
