A state Senate resolution honoring the Colorado scientists who shared in last year’s Nobel Peace Prize turned into a debate on global warming.
The Senate ultimately voted 27-8 Tuesday to back the nonbinding measure. The vote followed criticism from some Republicans that the wording of the resolution reinforced what they called the myth that human activity is heating up the planet.
The resolution said that global warming is human-caused and that 11 of the past 12 years were the warmest on record worldwide.
Republican Sen. Greg Brophy presented NASA statistics that showed that four of the United States’ hottest years in the last century were in the 1930s.
He later voted for the measure, saying he still wants to honor the scientists. The Associated Press
