COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Army investigators are looking into the death of a Fort Carson soldier who died while at Fort Irwin, Calif., for training.
Fort Carson officials confirmed the death Saturday of Spc. Emily T. Ort, 24, of Willis, Texas, but had no other details.
Fort Irwin spokesman John Wagstaffe said Ort was discovered apparently asleep early Saturday, but when she didn’t wake up, she was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The cause of death is unknown. An autopsy was planned.
Defense Department officials released a statement late Tuesday from Ort’s family that said the young woman recently re-enlisted in the Army to provide a good life for her 16-month-old son.
“She was spontaneous and loved spending time with her family and friends. Emily was determined to succeed in everything she undertook,” the statement said.
Ort was a member of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.
She had been in the Army since November 2003.
