LOS ANGELES — Lakers center Andrew Bynum might undergo exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his injured left knee if there is no significant improvement in the next three to four weeks.

Lakers spokesman John Black said Bynum was examined Wednesday by Dr. Steven Gecha in Princeton, N.J. Black said the team was told there had been some improvement in the 20-year-old center’s knee, but Gecha’s recommendation was exploratory surgery if there wasn’t more in the upcoming weeks.

“I’m not surprised about it,” coach Phil Jackson said.

Arenas’ return hinges on Jamison

WASHINGTON — Guard Gilbert Arenas insists he won’t return to the Wizards if forward Antawn Jamison isn’t re-signed by the team.

“If he doesn’t come back, I’m not coming back,” Arenas said.

Arenas, who missed most of this season after two operations on his left knee, can opt out of his contract.

Jamison, a team co-captain, is set to become a free agent.

“I want to be back in Washington, but weird things happen in free agency,” Arenas said. “If Antawn is not back, then there’s no point in me coming back.”

Arenas and Jamison have been teammates the past four seasons in Washington, and they were together with the Warriors for two seasons.

Footnotes.

Atlanta forward Marvin Williams was suspended one game without pay for committing a flagrant foul, penalty two in the Hawks’ Game 7 playoff loss Sunday in Boston.

Williams, who will serve the suspension in his first game next season, knocked Boston guard Rajon Rondo to the floor with 9:09 left in the third quarter of the Celtics’ 99-65 win.

Meanwhile, Billy Knight will step down as general manager of the Hawks on July 1, despite leading the team to its first playoff appearance in nine years.

• Nets forward Richard Jefferson was charged with assault for grabbing another man by the throat in a Minneapolis club Jan. 27. Jefferson’s first court hearing is set for June 18.

• A trial that likely will determine whether the SuperSonics play in Seattle or Oklahoma City next season will begin June 16 as scheduled.
